Concussion needs to be taken seriously. Symptoms of concussion include headaches, excessive tiredness, nausea, dizziness and a general feeling of being unwell, and these symptoms may last up to 6 weeks.
If you have recently been concussed, it is important that you take the following steps:
- SEE A DOCTOR to obtain a medical certificate
- CONTACT YOUR COURSE COORDINATORS to explain what’s happened (cut and paste the example email below)
- LET YOUR HC KNOW so they can keep an eye out for you
- REST for at least 24 hours and avoid screens and study.
Example email to send to your lecturer:
Dear Dr ………….
My name is ………………… and I am a student in your ………… class held on (insert day) at (insert time). I am contacting you to let you know that I got concussed while playing sport on the weekend. I have seen a doctor and attach a medical certificate, but wanted to contact you in case there are any complications with the recovery.
Then insert what is relevant: Please excuse my absence from the tutorial this morning OR Would it be possible to negotiate an extension on the upcoming assignment?
I appreciate your assistance in this matter.
Your name, student number, phone
Don’t forget to attach the medical certificate! If necessary, you may need to touch base with your lecturer the following week to give them an update on your recovery.
