About the Country Teachers Scholarship
The South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools provides scholarships to encourage and attract students who are passionate about commencing a teaching career in a Catholic country school. Students who will commence their third year of undergraduate study or higher in 2023 are encouraged to apply, as well as students studying a Masters of Education.
$2,500 per year (to a maximum of $5,000) is available for students in their final two years of a full time teacher education program at a tertiary institution in South Australia. Students in their final year are also encouraged to apply for a one year scholarship.
The scholarship is intended to assist students with their academic expenses. Scholarship payments are made at the end of each semester, and are subject to successful completion of the previous semester’s work. Scholarship holders will be required to submit a certified copy of their academic transcript at the end of each semester to receive the next semester’s payment.
Scholarship holders will be expected upon successful completion of the teacher education program to make every effort to apply and secure a teaching position in a Catholic country school. Any obligation to make applications will cease 12 months after completion of teacher education studies.
Scholarship recipients are not provided with a country position as part of this program. Principals of schools are responsible for teacher appointments. Therefore, scholarship holders must make an appropriate application for advertised positions and are considered equally on their merits with other applicants.
Minimum employment requirements of all teachers in the Catholic Education system must also be met including but not limited to Teacher Registration in South Australia, Working with Children Check and successful clearance of Catholic Education screening processes.
Scholarships cannot be deferred for any reason. Scholarship holders are expected to complete their teacher education program in the minimum time and to commence making applications for employment in a Catholic country school in South Australia towards the conclusion of their teacher education program.
Applicants are required to complete the application form and attach copies of any education qualification certificates and copies of their latest statement of academic results. A shortlist of applicants will be invited to attend an interview.
Your application must include:
- Application Statement addressing as a minimum: commitment to Catholic ethos, teaching in a Catholic country school and aspirations as a teacher (maximum 2 pages)
- Resume (maximum 2 pages)
- Academic results to date
- 2023 Application Form
- Personal and professional qualities attested to by referees
Nomination of preferred teaching locations. The preparedness by the applicant to teach in any Catholic country school in South Australia is an advantage.
