Early success in the 2018 HTC
Aquinas College’s bid to hold onto the inter-collegiate High Table Cup it won in 2017 received an early boost with victory in the first round of sports for 2018 – the annual tennis tournament.
Held at the Memorial Drive Courts on Sunday 4 March, a well-balanced and keen Aquinas team held off strong challenges particularly from St Mark’s and St Ann’s Colleges to bring the tennis trophy back to the top of the hill for the first time in four years.
Student Club President, Eliza Boulton, said that she was delighted with the efforts of both the men’s and women’s teams. “We were bolstered this year with some good new tennis talent among our Freshers, especially the women,” said Eliza. She congratulated also the Student Club Sports Secretaries, Aimee Oxlade and Stephen Sochaki, for their organisation before the event, as well as the tennis team’s coaches, Fletcher Thomas and Sean Kuerschner.
“It was a great effort from everyone,” Eliza said, “and it sets us up well for the other competitions through the year.”
“What was especially pleasing was the huge support for the team, with just about everybody going down in College colours to cheer them on,” Eliza added.
The next event on the inter-college calendar is the HTC Swimming this Thursday.
