Aquinas women defend their HTC netball title
In a replay of last year’s inter-college netball final, Aquinas again defeated Flinders Hall in decisive fashion, bringing the trophy home to Montefiore Hill for another year.
Large numbers of supporters from both colleges were courtside for the match, generating a charged atmosphere with their chants, cheers, and cardboard signage. It was a night of skilled and intense netball.
Extra pressure was created from the Aquinas captain/coach and key playmaker, Ellie Gould, having been sidelined in the early rounds the previous week when playing St Mark’s. Nursing an ACL tear, Ellie had to content herself as sideline tactician for the final.
‘I was so proud of the girls,’ said Ellie. ‘They played a smart and clinical game, and just kept building our winning margin.’
Ellie attributed the win both to the depth of netball talent in the College, but also to her teamates’ commitment to their preparation and training right through the term.
The Aquinas men were also victorious on the night, in the play-off for third place against St Mark’s. Like the women, they were able to build a double-digit lead as the match progressed.
Everyone is now looking forward to HTC football and debating which take place soon after the mid-semester break.
