Outreach Semester One 2016

The Outreach Program for 2016 started strong, with the first event being held before the academic year had even begun. Many students helped at the Tour Down Under family day which was held in January on the front lawns. These students worked tirelessly all day, and started their Outreach campaign with a bang.

However, arguably the college’s largest Outreach event was yet to come. On the 4th of March, we held our second annual Aquinas Sleep Out, which again was a great success. The Aquinas community embraced the opportunity to help raise both awareness and vital funds for the local Hutt Street Centre which aims to help those homeless and less fortunate than ourselves in the local community. The Sleep Out was very well attended, with over half of the college pitching in and giving up the comfort of their bed for the night and braving the elements on nothing but a piece of very thin cardboard on the basketball court. In the end, we raised an enormous $1400. A massive thanks to George Hughes for helping to run the show, and the Student Club for helping with money collection.

Next was the World’s Greatest Shave event which was well attended and saw the brave lads shave off their luscious locks. These boys raised $1600 for the Cancer Council, and thanks to everyone who came out and supported the cause and gave money on the night.

Throughout the term we saw people helping out Can Do 4 Kids, St Vincent de Paul Society,      Re-engage Youth Services, donating blood and others who did their own volunteering back home.

This upcoming term we hope to team up with St Vincent de Paul Society, Royal Flying Doctor Service Badge Day, Guide Dogs, and hope to hold a “Girls Night In” event which will be sure to be a lot of fun. I will keep you all posted. Cheers   Sam Daw,  Outreach Co-Ordinator
