Aquinas all-conquering in footy
Both the Aquinas men’s and women’s XVIIIs have finished as undefeated premiers in this year’s much anticipated HTC Football competition.
While all eleven HTC competitions are technically of the same value, it cannot be denied that football occupies a pre-eminent place in the inter-college collective psyche and carries its own kudos.
Lead coaches for 2022, Oscar Peltz and Hannah Schlink, were enormously satisfied with the teams’ performances.
‘We knew that we had two strong teams,’ said Oscar, ‘but they needed to deliver on the day. And they certainly did!’
All four games for the men resulted in convincing wins, with Aquinas building impressive scores in through each. The team was never behind on the scoreboard, demonstrating tightness and control in the backline and a variety of attack in mid-field and up front.
‘We had a very balanced team, and the boys really combined well,’ said Oscar.
For the women it was a tale of two days. Playing Flinders and Lincoln on the first Sunday, the Aquinas team clocked up over a hundred point in each game, while keeping their own goals unbreeched all day. In rounds 3 and 4 – against St Ann’s and then St Mark’s – there was more of a tussle. The St Mark’s game proved to be the tightest, with the lead alternating all game. In the end, there was just a single point in it.
Aquinas has thus achieved the quite rare honour of winning the prized double in both netball and football this year.
