Aquinas Men win HTC Soccer, with the Women an unlucky fourth place
The Men’s soccer team started the day with a game against Flinders. That game finished up with the men taking a 4-0 victory. The second game, against St Ann’s, was tight all the way through as St Ann’s played a very defensive game; the men pushed hard but finished with a 0-0 draw. It was a similar story in the third game against Lincoln that also finished as a 0-0 draw.
Going into the last game against St Mark’s, tension was high as Aquinas needed to defeat St Mark’s to have any chance of winning the day. After a few minutes passed in the game, Austin Rossi from the goalie position, sent a long ball over the top for Dannen Blacker to run on and score, this put us up 1-0. They held strong for the remainder of the game and took away the win.
The game between Lincoln and St Mark’s became the decider as to where Aquinas was placed. Fortunately, Lincoln defeated St Mark’s thereby giving the Aquinas Men first place in HTC Soccer for 2024 and making it three years in a row the Aquinas men’s soccer team has secured the Soccer HTC Cup.
The vibes were high in the 2024 Women’s Soccer Team. From the second Women’s Soccer was mentioned at college, there was a large turnout at training and the progression of so many players from the first training session to game day was phenomenal. Prior to the HTC Sunday, Aquinas played scratch matches against Lincoln and St Ann’s. These matches were a great experience and a good way to get to know some of the women of other Colleges.
When it came to the HTC Sunday, the women put up a good fight. The first game against Flinders gave Aquinas a win. The Aquinas Women then lost to St Ann’s 1 -0 and then drew with both St Mark’s and Lincoln. The determination and cohesiveness of the Women’s team was evident, especially considering that most had not played soccer before. Unfortunately, due to a couple of draws, the placings came down to goal percentages which saw us come in 4th. This 4th place was not at all a reflection of the talents and efforts of the Aquinas Women on the day.
