Aquinas Women win the HTC AFL Cup again!
Women’s AFL
Our HTC Women’s Football Coaches faced a difficult task from the outset due to the depth of gifted footballers. With a mix of experienced players and exciting up-and-coming talent, we were well placed heading into the competition.
Round 1, which was dedicated to the Childhood Cancer Foundation, saw us take on Lincoln and Flinders. The women delivered a brilliant display of team football, earning the points in both games.
Round 2, Indigenous Round, followed on the next Sunday. The Round opened with another dominant performance against St Ann’s, keeping them scoreless with a polished and purposeful brand of footy. The final game of the day against St Mark’s was always going to be a challenge for the Aquinas Women, as St Mark’s was also undefeated.
Absent was one of the coaches and players, Alice, who was in Perth representing the State Team. Kai stepped up to assist Eliza on the bench. The high quality of the squad across every line was evident. Our speed, connection and skill were on full display as we produced a superb team performance to secure the win, and with it, the overall victory of the Women’s AFL HTC, with the Cup going back to the top of the Hill for the second year in a row.
A huge congratulations to Aquinas Fresher, Aoife Berry for being awarded player of the series with the awarding of the “St Ann’s Chelsea Masclet Medal for Best Player”.
Men’s AFL
Leading up to the First Round, dedicated to raising money for Childhood Cancer, the men shaved their heads and or coloured their hair, with Aquinas students p
aying for the pleasure of watching the shave and or colour. The first game against Lincoln College had a shaky start however in the second half the men stood up and pulled off a gutsy win. Elijah Stratford, Bradley Phelps, and Cayde Watson were standout performers in the 33-point victory. Game 2 against Flinders saw a classy 97-point victory, with big performances across the board. Standout players were Mitchell Bailey, Blake Pitman and Sam Sims. Unfortunately, star player and Captain Lachlan Begs cracked his ribs, ruling him out for the following weekend.
Week two of HTC football celebrated the Indigenous Round , and our game 3 matchup against St Ann’s saw the 100-point win barrier nearly broken with a monstrous 98-point win. Hunter Wilkie, Riley Lang and Lachlan Lang were standout performers in the classy victory. Game 4 saw the heavily anticipated matchup with St Mark’s. A sloppy first half had the team on the back foot early, an unreal defensive effort from the backline kept the contest alive. A massive 60 metre goal from coach Harry Mitchell pried the door back open but we ran out of time to come back. Jackson Bowden, Geoff Slattery and Cayde Watson were dominant across all four games taking out our best players. The final result saw us come second to St Mark’s overall.
